報告題目:Understanding Student Engagement in Everyday Science Classrooms

報告簡要:

 The aim of this presentation is to outline a sociological understanding of student engagement. I will briefly present an overview of the ideas in student engagement from psychological perspectives, before introducing a sociological model of student engagement. The sociological model is based on the concept of emotional energy which is an individual and collective experience of social cohesion and togetherness that people experience during successful social interactions. I will illustrate this model with a short sample of interaction data from an Australian science classroom. This illustration shows how emotional energy changes over time, how ideas are always at the centre of emotion, and how teachers can influence emotional energy through the design of learning experiences.

報告人簡介:

 Dr James Davis is an academic in STEM education, at the Queensland University of Technology, in Brisbane, Australia. In initial teacher education, he has taught across science curriculum and pedagogy; foundations of science; integrated STEM; and, emotions in teaching and learning. His research interests focus on enacted pedagogy and the emotive-cognitive interplay in student engagement and learning. He adopts research methods that study emotional energy as part of micro-social interaction such as conversation, facial actions and bodily gesture. His research on emotions in science education includes six book chapters published with Routledge and Springer, and several journal articles with the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Cultural Studies of Science Education. During 2017-2019 he has been an assistant editor for the journal Research in Science Education.
